How we
got started...
Grosvenor Chorale is based in Belfast and was formed in
1993 by its Musical Director, Edward Craig, in memory of
Ronald E. Lee M.B.E. Ronnie's name was synonymous with choral
music of the highest standard from the 1940s until his death
in 1992. The title 'Grosvenor' reminds both singers and
listeners of, Grosvenor High School, where Ronnie's influence
in the field of choral music was felt the most; taking the
school choir to win both the Recontres International de
Montreux in Switzerland and the BBC Sainsbury's Choir of
the Year in 1985/86.
Grosvenor
Chorale enjoys singing a varied repertoire including music
from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries. They have
performed in many venues, from Down Cathedral, Downpatrick
to Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin; and from St. Anne's
Cathedral, Belfast to Hexham Abbey and Durham Cathedral
in England. They can often be heard on BBC Radio, both local
and national, taking part in such programmes as Sunday Worship,
Sunday Half Hour and the Daily Service broadcasts. As well
as singing in the fabulous acoustics of great cathedrals,
the choir enjoy bringing choral music to theatre goers and
have recently given concerts in Ballyearl Theatre, Newtownabbey
and Burnavon Theatre, Cookstown.
Our first
recording, 'Sing we and Chant it' was released in 1996 and
in December 2000 the choir released a CD of Carols 'Love
came down at Christmas'. On two occasions they have been
awarded the title of RTE Lyric FM Choir for Christmas.
The choir
rehearses weekly on Monday evenings in St Johns Church of
Ireland on the Castlereagh Road, and are grateful to Canon
Laverty and the Select Vestry for their kind permission
to do so. To keep in touch with the choir as a "Friend
of Grosvenor" or to enquire about membership, email
us from our "contact us"
section.
